About 600 guests gathered May 13 for the 50th anniversary version of CSU's
annual President's Recognition Banquet, fulfilling the desire to create a
"community wide celebration" to recognize the anniversary and pay tribute to
retiring President Frank D. Brown for leading CSU since 1988.
One highlight of the evening was the awarding of the prestigious
Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award to Brown. Recognition also came in the form of
special presentations to Brown by state Sen. Seth Harp, R-Midland, and
Sharon Jamieson of CSU Teen Achievers, a

program for minority
youth that Brown has supported for 20-plus years. CSU

also made a
special presentation to Brown's wife, Jo Ann Brown.
The creation of a special Alumni Leadership Award honoring Dr. Brown
also was announced. A 15-minute film on CSU history highlighted the
anniversary aspect of the program, and a separate slideshow focused
on Dr. Brown's life. |
Other speakers at the banquet included W.B. Turner Sr., retired chairman of
the board and CEO of the W.C. Bradley Company; CSU Foundation trustee Jimmy
Yancey, retired chairman of the board of Synovus; Troy Woods, president and
chief operating officer of TSYS; and businessman Bill Reaves, chairman of
the CSU Foundation.
