Snapshots of anniversary events past and future

Several events still remain in conjunction with Columbus State University’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2008. Details will be available as plans are finalized. For now, though, organizers are asking the university community and friends of the university community to be aware of these 2008 dates and plan around them accordingly:

  • Jan. 24, Opening Day: See the photo gallery and the slideshow (Windows Media)  now online from this day's events organized by a committee led by Department of Communication Chair Richard Baxter. Besides cake and proclamations, current students, faculty and staff enjoyed hearing from the special guests for the day, Columbus College's earliest alumni. They attended classes in the former Shannon Hosiery Mill from 1958-1963, before main campus took shape.

  • April 4-5, Open House-Homecoming: This weekend will combine traditional alumni and student homecoming events with a campuswide open house to showcase the university’s facilities, talent and intellect. Among the planned activities are alumni reunions, a craft fair, drive-in movie, a baseball game doubleheader, tailgating, a downtown street party, a panel discussion about CSU’s history, a bonfire, a tennis tournament, faculty research displays and a concert and fireworks show, said Annual Fund Director Meri Robinson, who is chairing the subcommittee planning the universitywide open house.

  • May 13, President's Recognition Banquet: The university’s traditional annual President’s Recognition Banquet was ramped up to include a 50th anniversary celebration, complete with special speakers and a new video look at CSU history. Executive Director of Alumni Relations Ray Lakes chaired the event.

  • Sept. 25, 50th Anniversary Convocation: This special event in the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts will include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin as the 2008 Hunter Lecture Series speaker, plus many elements of the annual Freshman Convocation. Chairing the event is Linda Hadley, the Bill Heard Chair of Finance and dean of the D. Abbott Turner College of Business.
