Share your memories of CSU or its predecessor, Columbus College

We're want to hear memories of alumni and others as CSU prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2008. Charlie Smith, one of Columbus College's first students, now retired and living in Smyrna, wrote recently:


Charlie Smith and Fay Tidwell were named “Wittiest” in Columbus College’s 1958-1959 Grey and Gold yearbook.

“My two years at this school were two of the greatest years of my life … I was born at Fort Benning and

raised at Baker Village and had recently gotten out of the Army and had no idea what direction I was headed when the college was opened. The school was new, and so was I. The staff and teachers, all new, couldn’t have been better. Classes were small and you had  individual help when needed. Dr. (T.Y.) Whitley (was) not only our

president but at times a kind and thoughtful father figure. What a wonderful time at this new

 institution. The staff, teachers and students all were  learning at the same time …

“I am so proud to have been a small part of the beginning of this great institution of learning. Watching it grow these past 50 years has filled my heart. I am looking forward to 2008.”
