In fall 2006, CSU's
50th Anniversary Steering Committee adopted theseguiding
principles:
The primary mission of
Columbus State University’s 50th Anniversary program is to
celebrate the university’s past achievements and its growing reputation as a
leader in academic excellence.
To accomplish this
mission, the anniversary program will include a variety of activities
designed to:
-
Reflect upon the essential character and
mission of CSU — its unique and visible place in the community, in Georgia
and beyond.
-
Honor the many
dedicated individuals and organizations who have been an
integral part of the university’s development and achievements
and recognize the outstanding accomplishments of students,
faculty, staff and alumni.
-
Acknowledge important milestones in CSU’s
history.
-
Showcase CSU's physical campus, its beauty
and the continuing legacy of its landscape and buildings.
-
Celebrate and
enhance the university's partnerships.
-
Promote the future
role that CSU will play in the community, region, state and society.
The 50th anniversary program will be developed and coordinated by a 50th
Anniversary Steering Committee. This group will be responsible for
determining a theme for the anniversary, planning signature anniversary
events, coordinating other events for the anniversary year and developing
special anniversary commemoratives.
In pursuing these responsibilities, the committee will strive to
provide broad opportunities for the community to participate in and
benefit from the many programs and activities offered throughout the
anniversary year. The committee also will take advantage of existing resources and recurring events and programs, such as
Freshmen Convocation, Commencement and the Hunter Lecture, to promote the anniversary celebration.

Mill was CSU's first home
CSU’s story begins in May of 1958, when the Georgia General Assembly
approved the establishment of a junior college in Columbus. Over the next few months a
campus was created in the old Shannon Hosiery Mill, above, on Talbotton
Road, and 15 faculty members were hired to teach the first classes. Finally,
on Sept. 30,1958, Columbus College opened
in the renovated mill to a student body of close to 300.

The desired outcomes
of the 50th anniversary celebration are that it will foster pride
in and loyalty to CSU among all constituents and enhance the image of CSU
within the state, region and nation, and throughout the world. In addition, it will draw
all constituents of the Columbus State University community closer together
around common objectives.
