The Honors Program

The Columbus State University Honors Program provides significant challenges and opportunities to enrich an exceptional student's education, taking the educational experience beyond the ordinary. The Honors Program strives to create a community of scholars and to simulate involvement in campus and community activities.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria are stated below. In certain cases, the Honors Program Committee may consider exceptions. Students may not enter the program while enrolled in developmental studies courses or in courses to remediate CPC deficiencies.

Two letters of recommendation from college or high school faculty (or. if a student is home-schooled, a non-relative who knows the student well).

Interview with members of the Honor's Selection Committee.

SAT score of 1200 or higher with a 550 minimum on both sections; or ACT composite score of 27; or a COMPASS score of 95 in reading, 97 in writing, and 48 in math.

Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher:

For entering freshmen, this 3.50 or higher GPA is based on high school academic courses only.

For freshmen and sophomores already enrolled at an accredited institution of higher education, this 3.50 or higher GPA is based on a minimum of 15 semester hours of degree credit, academic courses only.

Honors Program Description

Students will take by Honors Contract three honors courses substituting for core curriculum courses. Class size will be limited to 18 students. Several honors core courses will be taught each semester. Honors Contracts must be submitted to the Honors Coordinator by mid-term of the semester.

Students will take a minimum of nine upper-division semester hours (exclusive of internship and cooperative programs) in the major or related area as designed by colleges in cooperation with departments. Upper division honors courses will encourage more advanced work or allow for greater creativity.

Each student will engage in an off-campus enrichment activity such as a service program, a service learning program, or study abroad.

Each student will participate in four on-campus enrichment activities (HONS 3000).

The thesis and oral defense are the capstones of the Honors Program. Topics must be approved within the student's major department.

Once admitted into the Honors Program, a student must enroll in a minimum of nine semester hours per semester and must maintain a 3.40 cumulative GPA.

To keep an Honors Scholarship or be retained in the Honors Program, a student must maintain a GPA of 3.5 and must make reasonable progression in fulfilling the requirements of the Honors Program.
