The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents issued this news release on the appointment of Mescon. Mescon will succeed Frank D. Brown, who plans to retire June 30 after 20 years as CSU's third president. Brown joined what was then Columbus College as vice president for business and finance in 1981. His tenure as CSU's leader makes him the current dean of presidents among the University System of Georgia's 35 institutions. Mescon was among the candidates nominated by a campus-based search committee led by Dr. George Stanton, vice president for academic affairs. In all, seven semi-finalists for the CSU presidency named by that committee visited Columbus State and met with faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends in public forums. That committee's recommendations for finalist candidates went to a Regents committee, which then made its choice known to USG Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr., who made the final decision on Mescon. The search for a successor to Brown began last December with the appointment of the two committees and, by February, more than 300 names had been considered in some fashion.
