Message from George Stanton, April 10, 2008
Dear Colleagues,
As I write this, we are nearing the end of the visit from Dr. Hynes, our
first presidential candidate. I want to remind you again that, if you have
had the opportunity to observe candidates, you are able to play a meaningful
role in this selection process. As I dressed this morning, I fell into the
professorial mode and developed a model for three ways in which students,
faculty, and staff may make constructive input.
You may lobby individual members of the search and screening committee,
telling them who you like and who you may not care for. The possible outcome
is that you will persuade one or more committee members to cast votes in the
way you prefer.- You may contribute in a democratic fashion by submitting an e-mail to
HeadCougar_Hunt@colstate.edu and vote
"yea" or "nay." The outcome will be
that a tally will be presented to the committee and may (should) influence
the final vote.
- You may contribute in an academic manner by submitting an e-mail to
HeadCougar_Hunt@colstate.edu and provide a bullet-point list of perceived
strengths and weaknesses. The outcome will be that a composite list of
strengths and weaknesses will be provided to the committee and, from it, the
committee will build a final list to submit to the special Regents
committee, the chancellor, and the executive vice chancellor. In this case,
you may even influence the final choice.
No one other than Dr. Norris or I will see your identity, and that will be
noted only to ensure that you are a member of the CSU family and that no
vote is counted more than once. After that, your input will be copied and
dropped into a spreadsheet and separated from your name. At the conclusion
of this process, all e-mails received will be deleted. Anyone who knows Dr.
Norris knows of his ability to maintain confidence of even the most
sensitive information, and if you knew what my memory has been like these
days, you will understand that if more than ten respond, I won't remember
who responded anyway. But I also pledge not to release any information
regarding the identity of anyone who responds.
Note: If you come across any information regarding these candidates on the
web, please send that to the e-mail address as well and provide the URL. The
more eyes we have on that task the better. If you have colleagues who know
any of these candidates, you may provide us with their impressions as well.
However, to be useful, you will need to identify your sources.
George
