Servant Leadership

Community Service
"The servant leader is servant first...It begins with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test, and the most difficult to administer is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or at least, not be further deprived?"

                                                           - Robert K. Greenleaf

The Servant Leadership Program serves the Columbus community through agency placements. Servant leadership students spend four to six hours a week volunteering at the agency of their choice. The purpose of this service is to fulfill Greenleaf's test by helping those served to grow as individuals. We have learned that as we seek to help others grow, we often learn that we are growing ourselves.

Quick Fact
Though most students can choose from our entire list of agencies, freshmen have a choice of volunteering at Girls Incorporated, Habitat for Humanity, or Oxbow Meadows during their first semester.  This gives the students an opportunity to volunteer in groups as part of the initial transition into the program. During the second semester, freshmen then have the opportunity to choose a placement from our full list.
